Vacuum assisted closure of laparostomy wounds "a novel technique".
نویسندگان
چکیده
Management of a laparostomy wound is contentious. Specific pathologies like severe intraabdominal sepsis, trauma requiring damage control, abdominal compartment syndrome, staged abdominal repair and other complex abdominal pathologies can be managed with a novel technique of Vacuum Assisted Closure dressing. This device applies sub-atmospheric pressure that leads to reduced bowel wall edema, bacterial count and inflammatory burden found in open abdominal wounds. This leads to a reduced need for frequent dressing changes, maintaining intact skin and improvement in fluid management. Controlled clinical studies are needed to establish the safety and effectiveness of this treatment strategy. We present our experience with this technique suggesting it to be safe and effective. A brief outline of the working of Vacuum Assisted Closure dressing is also presented.

Vacuum Assisted Closure- utilization as home based therapy in the management of complex diabetic extremity wounds
OBJECTIVE Vacuum assisted closure is a reported technique to manage complex wounds. We have utilized this technique by using simple locally available material in the management of our patients on outpatient basis. The objective of this study is to present our experience. METHODS This study was conducted from June 2011 to June 2013 at Dow University Hospital and Aga Khan University Hospital, K...
متن کاملVacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) at Home: Developing a New Concept
BACKGROUND The vacuum assisted closure (VAC) therapy has revolutionized the modern wound care. We developed a new concept of ‘VAC at home’ in order to decrease the hospital cost. METHODS The study was conducted in a private hospital from January 2009 to December 2010. Only those patients were included among whom the wounds were not complicated by concomitant injury and the patients were othe...
متن کاملThe clinical efficacy and cost effectiveness of the vacuum-assisted closure technique in the management of acute and chronic wounds: a randomized controlled trial.
BACKGROUND Vacuum-assisted closure therapy is a relatively new concept described in the literature that increases wound-healing capacity. The authors aimed to investigate the effect of vacuum-assisted closure therapy on wound healing, granulation tissue formation, bacterial clearance, pain, time involvement of the staff, and total costs in all types of wounds in comparison with modern wound dre...
متن کاملUse of intraabdominal VAC (Vacuum Assisted Closure) lowers mortality and morbidity in patients with open abdomen.
OBJECTIVE Authors compare two groups of patients with open abdomen. The objective is to compare and evaluate two treatment modalities, namely Kern laparostomy and vacuum-assisted closure in terms of mortality, closure of abdominal wound, and fistula management, all these stratified by BMI and CRP. BACKGROUND Open abdomen can be considered a "patient salvage technique", used in patients with a...
متن کامل[NPWT]: Evolution of Indications for its Use
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy [NPWT], or Vacuum-assisted closure therapy [VAC therapy], is a therapeutic method using a special sponge or gauze dressing with a vacuum device to promote wound healing. Aim of the study was to assess changes in indications for use of NPWT as well as evaluation of results of its use during the last ten years by comparing the literature published in the years 2002...
